 strong> (2021, 75 mn)</div><div style="padding-left: 30px;"><i>Using the Ox
us river as a topos, this film explores themes of love and loss through the
lives and musical poetry of two Wakhi musicians: Qurbonsho in Tajikistan a
nd Daulatsho in Afghanistan. These two poet-singers share a common language
and faith yet remain separated by vicissitudes of the 19th c. Great Game i
n Central Asia, whereby the Wakhan homeland of the Wakhi people became a bu
ffer zone between Russia and the British Empire. The river Oxus, running ri
ght through the center of Wakhan, demarcated this zone. After the USSR and
Afghanistan shored up their boundaries circa 1930, the communities on each
side of the river became firmly severed from one another. The condition of
being separated by a river grounds the poets’ discussions of love and loss
in their own lives as well as in their musical arts. The film was shot and
produced over 2.5 years (2012-2020) with the editorial collaboration of bot
h Qurbonsho and Daulatsho, who narrate the film in Wakhi, Tajik and Dari.</
